Unit One Overview- Canadian ArtThis is a featured page

Overview

I have decided to divide the month into three sections (See the Calendar of Events for specific daily activities). The first section, which will be one week long, will be about exploring Canadian identity in art. As this is a very vast topic, I have decided that after our initial brainstorming (the Group Project) on Canadian Art and identity, we will focus in on four artists, Emily Carr, Dr. Gerald McMaster, Victor Cicansky, and Betty Goodwin. I have chosen each artist for a specific reason, and for specific components of the Canadian art world that they will help me to incorporate into my lesson. Carr is from the West coast, Dr. McMaster and Victor Cicansky are local Saskatchewan artists, and Betty Goodwin is from Eastern Canada; therefore, we are covering a wide range of locations, with a slight emphasis on understanding our own artistic community here in Saskatchewan. This local emphasis is meant to help students find out more about their own artistic identity.

These artists will help me highlight the great diversity of Canadian art. I have chosen two women and two men, so that both genders are equally represented. Emily Carr will help us look into Canadian artwork in the past, while the other three artists will help students better understand the current artistic identity of Canada. Discussing Emily Carr will allow me to introduce painting and drawing, the Group of Seven, the role of British influences in Canadian art history, the roles women have played in Canadian art, expressionism, and the influences of Aboriginal imagery. Discussing Dr. Gerald McMaster will help me show how art can be an expression of social issues, most notably of social issues related to Aboriginal people, as well as allow me to introduce technology in art through his multi-media exhibits. Betty Goodwin allows me to introduce printmaking, etching, Eastern Canadian influences on art, abstraction in contrast with realism, and urban Canadian landscape. Victor Cicanski allows me to introduce clay and bronze sculpture, and helps to show how art can be an expression of your everyday life and the lens you view that life through. Discussing Cicanski's work will lead into our Individual Arts Projects. These projects will take us from exploring Canadian artistic identity into exploring individual artistic identity.
